How to clean a leather bag at home, and when to book a bag spa instead

Leather is skin. It darkens where your hand sits, takes on whatever it is set down on, and in Singapore it meets sweat and humidity all year round. Most of the damage we see does not come from use. It comes from cleaning — the wrong wipe, too much water, a hairdryer. Here is how to clean a leather bag at home without making it worse, and how to tell when it needs a professional bag spa instead.

Before you start: know your leather

This routine is for smooth and grained finished leather — the coated, colour-fast leather most designer handbags are made from. Leave these to a professional:

  • Suede and nubuck. Water marks them, and most cleaners flatten the nap.
  • Untreated natural cowhide — the pale trim and handles on many canvas bags. It stains with water and darkens for good.
  • Exotic skins — crocodile, alligator, ostrich, python and lizard. Scales lift and colour moves.
  • Very light colours — white, cream, pale pink — where any mistake shows.

How to clean a leather bag, step by step

  1. Empty it completely and shake out the lining. Crumbs and grit wear the inside.
  2. Dust it with a soft, dry brush — horsehair is ideal — along the seams, corners and grain.
  3. Test first. Put a little cleaner made for finished leather on a white cotton cloth and try it somewhere hidden, under a flap or on the base. If colour comes off on the cloth, stop.
  4. Clean gently, in small circles, with a barely damp cloth. Never pour anything onto the leather, and never soak it.
  5. Wipe off any residue with a clean, dry cloth.
  6. Dry it naturally, in the shade, stuffed loosely with paper so it holds its shape. No sun, no hairdryer, no heater.
  7. Condition sparingly. A thin layer of leather conditioner once the bag is fully dry, buffed off after a few minutes. Too much darkens the leather and attracts dust.

What never to use on a designer bag

  • Baby wipes and wet wipes. Most contain alcohol, fragrance or soap, which dry leather out and can lift the finish.
  • Household cleaners, dish soap and hand sanitiser. Too harsh, and sanitiser strips colour.
  • Melamine sponges ("magic erasers"). They are abrasive. They remove the mark by removing the surface.
  • Vinegar and alcohol, unless you are dealing with mould — and even then, read this first.
  • Heat. A hairdryer or direct sun shrinks and cracks leather.

How often does a leather bag need cleaning?

Dust it and wipe it with a dry cloth every week or two if you carry it daily. For a proper clean and condition, roughly twice a year for an everyday bag, and once a year — or before it goes into storage — for one that comes out occasionally. Bring it in sooner if:

  • It has been caught in heavy rain and dried unevenly
  • The handles have darkened where your hand sits
  • Something has spilled inside
  • It smells musty, or you can see pale spots of mould
  • Denim has rubbed colour onto a light leather
  • The hardware has dulled or spotted

What a bag spa does that home cleaning cannot

A bag spa is a full clean done on the bench, not a wipe-down. Ours covers:

  • Exterior and interior deep cleaning
  • Leather conditioning and moisturising, so it does not dry and crack
  • Hardware polishing
  • An anti-bacterial treatment
  • A protective coating, and waterproofing on request

It costs from S$70 per item, or three items for S$188. Suede, exotic skins and heavily soiled pieces are quoted after we have seen them. We clean shoes and wallets on the same terms.

What a spa will not fix

A spa is cleaning and conditioning. It will not put colour back into leather that has rubbed through, re-dye a faded panel or replace a handle. That is restoration, quoted separately once we have seen the piece — see bag repair and leather restoration in Singapore.

Book a bag spa in Singapore
