If you are deciding where to sell a luxury bag in Singapore, you are really answering two questions: how quickly do you want the money, and how much of the work do you want to do yourself? Every option trades one against the other. Here is how they compare, what decides the figure you are offered, and how to prepare a designer bag before you ask anyone for a quote.
Three ways to sell a designer bag in Singapore
| Sell it yourself | List it on a marketplace and deal with buyers directly. Potentially the highest figure, but you take the photographs, answer the questions, negotiate and meet strangers — and you carry the risk if a sale goes wrong. |
|---|---|
| Sell outright to a reseller | The reseller quotes, you accept, you are paid. The fastest and most certain route. The figure is lower than a good private or consignment sale, because the reseller now carries the piece and the risk. |
| Consign with a reseller | The reseller photographs, lists and sells it for you, then pays you after it sells. Usually the higher net figure on a desirable piece, without the work of selling privately. You wait for a buyer. |
Outright sale or consignment: which is better?
Neither, in general. It depends on the piece and on you.
- Sell outright if you want the matter closed today, or if the piece is one that sells slowly. Certainty has a value.
- Consign if the piece is in demand and you can wait for the right buyer. On sought-after models in good condition, consignment usually returns more.
We do both. We will tell you which we think serves you better for that particular bag, including when that is the one that earns us less.
What decides what your bag is worth
We are asked this every day, usually with a photograph attached. There is no single answer, but there is a consistent order to what matters.
1. Condition
The largest single factor, and the one you cannot talk around: corners, handles, hardware, lining and shape. A bag that has been looked after is worth meaningfully more than the same model that has not.
2. Completeness
Box, dust bag, receipt, authenticity card, shoulder strap, lock and keys, clochette. None of these are required — we will look at a bag without any of them — but each one moves the number.
3. Demand right now
This is the part that changes. Some models are quietly sought after for years; others move with a season. Size, colour, leather and hardware all count. We price against what is actually selling, not against a retail figure that no longer applies.
What does not help
The original retail price is not the floor, and a rare colour is only valuable if somebody wants that colour. We will tell you plainly when a piece is worth less than you were hoping.
How to prepare a bag before you ask for a quote
- Clean it, but do not restore it. An emptied, dusted bag photographs honestly. Home fixes on colour or edges usually cost more than they add.
- Gather what came with it — dust bag, box, receipt, card, strap, lock and keys.
- Photograph it in daylight: front, back, base, all four corners, the handles, the interior, the hardware, and any date code or serial markings.
- Know its history if you can: where, and roughly when, it was bought.
Should you pay for a spa or a repair before selling?
Usually not, beyond a basic clean. Restoration can lift what a bag is worth, but it rarely lifts it by more than the restoration costs, and some buyers would rather have honest original wear than a refinish. If a repair would genuinely pay for itself, we will say so. If it would not, we will say that too. More on that in bag repair and leather restoration.
Selling a watch?
The same logic applies, plus a few watch-specific points: box and papers, service history, and whether the case has been polished. See sell your watch and our guide to buying a pre-owned Rolex, which covers what moves a watch's price from the other side of the counter.
Sell or consign with House of Brandz
We buy outright and take pieces on consignment: bags, watches, fine jewellery, small leather goods and shoes from the houses we already trade in. Send photographs on WhatsApp to 9754 5910, or bring the piece to 20 Cecil Street, #02-02 PLUS, and we will come back with an outright offer, a consignment estimate, or both. Start a valuation.
House of Brandz is an independent reseller, trading in Singapore since 2008. We are not affiliated with, or an authorised dealer for, any of the brands we sell.
